- <p> DIED. Margot Fonteyn, 71, legendary prima ballerina; of
- cancer; in Panama City. Born Margaret Hookham in Surrey,
- England, Fonteyn made her debut as a snowflake with the
- Vic-Wells Ballet (now known as the Royal Ballet) at 15 and
- distinguished herself in a 50-year career with a classical and
- graceful but passionate style. Memorable performances, such as
- The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Giselle and Romeo and Juliet,
- sustained unstinting critical and box-office success. In 1962,
- at 42, Dame Margot started a dynamic partnership with Rudolf
- Nureyev, who was 19 years younger. Formerly of the Kirov
- Ballet, he had defected from the Soviet Union in 1961. They
- danced together until the late 1970s. Said Nureyev: "For me she
- represents eternal youth."
